Longest living animal discovered yesterday...

I am a subscriber of TreeHugger's newsletter and thought this was insane...
Clocking in at around 405 years, Ming was plucked off the seafloor near Iceland's north coast by a team of researchers from Wales' Bangor University.

So last night my brother, John Paul, and his wife, Sarah, had their first baby, Nina. Words can't express how happy I am for them, and how excited I am to meet her!

Make a Difference Day!

Today is "Make a Difference Day!" So I participated, along with a group of our middle school students, in painting parts of our local elementary school, Lahoya Elementary. We painted 4 backstops and part of the playground (pictures coming soon). After we finished, we cleaned up a little (I have never seen so much red paint) and walked back to the church building and hung out while we waited for some pizza and ate together. It is days like these that brings me excitement as I see God revealing his Kingdom. God using simple acts of kindness done by his children to bring about His enormous love for the world. Praise be to God!

Miss my family...

I was going through some photos on my mac this morning and came upon this one from the weekend that the Overflow played in the main service...I miss you guys down there.

Greener Days...

So today, I was just online checking emails...and as usual get distracted and veer off on my own path to several websites. Here are some of the more interesting things I discovered:

The U.S. is getting a little greener...here is a section of the article:
By this time next year, the U.S. will have its first ever 24-hour channel devoted to a green lifestyle. Set to debut in over 50 million homes, the re-branded Discovery Home Channel will provide entertaining, authentic and truly useful information on such topics as eco-design, organic food and green architecture. And watch for it online and on your PDAs and cell phones, too.
Not to mention 50 million of dollars invested into creating new shows about greener topics, "Ten Ways to Save the Planet" and "GO GREEN"...here is the website...http://planetgreen.discovery.com/

Next Topic...
I saw this in an email from TreeHugger about a 2 Mile Challenge...basically asking people if they are within two miles of their destination, whether it is work, a coffee shop, etc. that they ride their bike to it. It is interesting, and they different challenges and utilize Google Maps to plan out your two mile radius from your home. Interesting, eh?
In my own life, I have been riding the bike to the church building which is about 2.5 miles away from our apartment. Work is right down the road (probably not even a mile) and I would like to ride their (which I did today to get my schedule) but I can't always do so because I work at night and my parents don't feel comfortable with me riding at night in the dark, which I understand, but the good news is that I now am working day shifts this week and I will probably be able to ride the old bike, yay! Not to mention, WaMu, Starbucks, and Target are all within 1-2 miles, amazing!

Speaking of bikes! I found these as well...
Folding Bikes...Crazy!
The article said that
"...it was envisaged as a full sized folding bicycle designed for urban adventures."
interesting concept...it isn't available in the U.S. yet, but it is being tested and possibly sold in Barcelona and off of a German Website.
“For clean aesthetics and low maintenance the drive system is hydraulic, and for storage and easy handling in elevators and on public transport the bike is also foldable. The folding mechanism shows a unique and highly innovative approach, with the central tube twisting through 180°.”
Here are the two articles...

One last quick discovery...
For those of you like me, I haven't found or looked up information on every latest eco-friendly subject, but I finally looked up info on Biodiesel...Here is a website that answered some FAQ's about Biodiesel as an alternative source for fuel. Along with a PDF about it.

Folding 4 Life!

Well I made it through my first week working at Aeropostale, Hooray! I have been a greeter, register clerk, and recoverer (clean up/fold clothes), and I just need to work on the standing part of my day...which is the whole shift. I really like it though, interesting people to work with and hey you can't forget that killer discount! Anyway, just thought I'd give you all an update on my week.

Your Friendly Neighborhood coffee drinker?

Yes, I have a Spider-Man Mug....and I am proud of it!

Quick Post...ok maybe not

Today was Blog Action Day! Anybody that wanted to participate could do so by (registering if you wanted) posting about the environment; whether an issue, observation, resource, artwork, media, etc. Another "action" encouraged on the website was to donate to a local or online charity/organization involved in helping the environment. I personally thought this was very cool, and so I wanted to make a quick post today (the last hour of the day in fact) to contribute to such a wonderfully natural cause.

I just wanted to list some ways I have tried to be more green, so to speak. I encourage you to way beyond what I am doing, or on the flipside, take this environmental lifestyle slowly at your own pace. I have in the past and even now tried to find ways to avoid using our cars to travel because of the pollution put into the air, the fuel it uses up, and not to mention the lack of exercise and interaction with people in the community (even more, when you are alone in the car). I understand that the car is nice when you want to go to the grocery store or you have to carry more than a few small things at a long distance. But here are some alternatives or options to this dilemma:
- Taking the bus
- Carpooling
- Growing some of your own food (veggies, fruits, etc.)
- Buying local (farmer's markets)
- Walking...it has been done!
If it is just one or two items needed for a meal, you might try asking your neighbors to borrow something, PLUS! you get to interact and meet (possibly new) people and it gives you the opportunity to talk to them again when you are returning the item.
But my all-time favorite is riding the bike! So many possibilities arise that just need a bike and that the bike ride brings into your life. For instance:
- Good Exercise
- A better appreciation for God's creation
- Socializing with other people (who'd-a-thunk!)
- Not using up any fuel or energy (besides your own, but it renews itself!)
- Fresh Air
- Guess what else...IT'S FUN!
- and many other reasons...

Other ways me and my family have tried to contribute...
- Reducing
  • Not consuming as much...this is a hard one for most people, it can be fun to buy new stuff or more stuff.
  • If you don't need it or can't afford it, then don't buy it!
    • Another approach is to wait a certain amount of time, like a week and still see if you need it or want it.
    • It is ok to buy stuff, even if just for pleasure, but try to think of the benefits that it will bring not only to you, but to your family, community, and maybe even the world.
  • Try not to over-consume
    • Make a list, plan, etc. and maybe even prioritize it to level of need/want/unnecessary
- Reusing
  • Can it be reused in any way? Then use it again!
  • Be creative with reusing things that don't need to be replaced, especially if not right away.
  • Donate, give, share or let some one else borrow something that you may not be able to use but someone else can use it.
  • Is it broken? FIX IT...don't know how? ASK SOMEONE!
- Recycling (this should be your last resort if the first two options are impossible...)
  • If the item is dirty or messy, do your best to wash/clean it and then put it in the recycle bin
  • Look for the symbol on the item
    • If your not sure if it can be recycled, then check the Internet or other resources to verify.
  • Here is a list and official website on the "recycle products shopping list":
Aluminum cans Newspapers
Cereal boxes Paper towels
Egg cartons Carpeting
Motor oil Car bumpers
Nails Anything made from steel
Trash bags Glass containers
Comic books Laundry detergent bottles
Some last minute methods...
- Compost
- Turn off or if possible, don't use electricity
- Turn the device off completely
- Surge protector switches
- CFL light bulbs
- Organic products
- Electric or less consuming gas operated vehicles
- SO many other ways, look on the internet!

I am now tired from a long first day at work (Aeropostale) and now I am going to sleep.
Thank You for reading.

¡Mis padres regresan en casa!

For those of who aren't fluent in Spanish (or don't know how to use an online translator), that means my parents are back home from their trip to Smogvil...I mean Riverside. They had a great time seeing friends and family from down south and visiting the park one last time. You can read about it on mom's blog.

Awww fond memories at the Magic Kingdom...Rocket Rods breaking down...gladly walking by extensive lines with a "oh-so" convenient FastPass...apple fritters...jazz bands in New Orleans Square...dazzling fireworks...bubbles emulating snow on main street...and of course, the ride home in our old, silver Mazda van in the back seat, laying down, watching the fireworks blend with stars, and then reminiscing of the day until falling asleep...good times, thanks mom and dad for all of those magical years at park.

FiX People & New Music

Here is a picture of (from left to right) Bob...our musical worship leader...John Paul...our Middle School Pastor...'his soon to be born' child, and his wife Sarah!
And I also put the audio plugin that's on Jon's blog onto mine...I have a version of All Creatures playing right now...it is in the top right corner.

My Mind is Tinkering!

So John-Paul and I met up today at Starbucks this afternoon to talk about our small group we will leading. It was a great time, but something even more memorable than the planning was when we surprised me with a jar of Tinker Toys! We may have looked like fools and sure, people were staring at us, but we didn't care...they were just jealous of our mechanical-madness of fun. So I ended up building, with the assistance of my friend JP, a sort of oil rig/space station/ship thingamabob. He built two sweet little vehicular devices...one that rolled and the other "flew". They were both tight! So we set the good old camera and took a photo (or two) of us with our masterpieces...Enjoy!

The Wonderful Cross

So our church is doing a project that focuses on the cross this week and so they invited everyone to build a cross maybe no bigger than 5 ft. and to be creative with it. So Monday they are going to hang them up as sort of a collage/mosaic/artsy fartsy cross thing which will be cool.

So FiX (middle school group) decided to let every student on Sunday to create a square of art and remembrance about the cross, what they think of, bible verses, etc. So we handed out square pieces of paper, they made amazing pieces of art with the stuff we had (pipe cleaners, magazines, markers, yarn) and we let them dry on a table. Soon we are going to placing them on our cross that John Paul made out of plywood that Katie got at Home Depot!

I however didn't finish my square (surprise, surprise), being the lazy-perfectionist I am...so I brought it home last night and finished it. Here it is...

I made my decision!

As I have posted before, I had been having a troublesome time choosing my next set of headphones and finally went to target yesterday and bought an over-the-head (Binaural) set of Sony Studio Monitor Headphones. I have been trying 'em out for different things, like mixing, iTunes music, movies, regular sounds on the mac, etc. and I really like 'em. Here is a pic:

Aero-Pos-Tale!

So this morning my mother, dog, and self took a walk to the mall (and WaMu) to drop off my job applications to American Eagle and Aeropostale. What is sweet is that these two stores are literally right across from each other inside. So anyway, I walked into Aeropostale to hand my app to a girl working there, she proceeded with asking me some questions and I ended up getting a job interview that afternoon! So I left the store and was going to proceed to A.E. with my other app and looked inside my bag to find, it was absent...so I went home and found that it was at home (almost like an act of God saying, "Micah, you should work at Aeropostale!"). I went to the interview that afternoon and everything went well, and I now have an orientation/training gig with Aero on Thursday morning! So needless to say I had a pretty good day. I took this picture on the way home from the first trip and loved Katie-Bug's tongue...she was kinda tired after our venture as you cant tell.

Mac 'n' Cheese, Donuts, and Eternal Water?

Doesn't this sound like heaven? Well actually its what happened last night at FiX! For those of you who can't remember, FiX is the Jr. High ministry I am involved in at SVCC.

Warning this is a really long post!

It was an awesome night, first I got to join some of the other leaders for a small group leader meeting because they are coming up soon (I'm pretty darn stoked about that), then we went down to have a leader meeting with the rest of the crew: Tom, Ron, Diana, Amanda, John Paul, Sarah, Bob, our newest member Linda (you can see her on Mamma's blog under "New Friends...Paul and Linda") and myself. Justin is another one of our leaders, but he wasn't there because he graduated from his Arabic/Military Class and had a celebration that night, Congrats Justin!

Then after we pray, we head outside to join the kids in whatever activities/sports they are taking part in. For instance, I was playing an extreme game of madness, formally known as 4-Square and then hopped over to the basketball court to jump in on a couple games of Knock-Out! Man I love hanging out with the students, so much energy and excitement!

Then we all headed back in to get acquainted with the games for the night, and we always have a student help out with the explanation of the games (Jr. High instructions are classic!). Last nights games can be described like so:

First Game
  1. Two people blindfolded (or in our case they were wearing black cat masks with duct tape covering the eye holes)
  2. One plastic cup full of Mac 'n' Cheese with a plastic spoon (they used half 'n' half instead of real milk, delicious!)
  3. One person attempts to feed the other the whole cup
  • Rule: No peeking and the person being fed can't use his hands.
Result:
Faces covered with macaroni and literally "Cheesy" smiles all around.
Success!

Second Game
  1. A line of hungry Jr. High students with their hands behind their back
  2. Two people holding a pole with several strings tied on, strings are hanging down
  3. Donuts are on the ends of each string
  4. Contestants have to eat their own donut hanging above them just using their mouth
  • Rule: You cannot let the donut drop while munching it off of the string.
Result:
All of the students cheering everyone on!
Extra donuts left over and students challenge each other in Donut Duals!
Success!

Ethan leads us in some musical celebration and poses some interesting questions about music traditions, like "So I am just curious, but why do you guys clap?"

John Paul leads all of us in a study through John 4 ("Woman at the Well" The Message; "Jesus and the Samaritan Woman") as we talk about the eternal spring of water that Jesus offers us no matter where we are or what we have done in our lives. Great questions and answers from the students about the topic!

We end the night with huddling up in little groups for praying and thanking God for his gift, guidance, patience, love and so much more!

Thank You God that I can take part in this!
